The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) welcomed Anika Smith to its team on Aug. 29. Smith will head the Association’s efforts to reduce the number of abortions in the United States.

“Around one million abortions every year is around one million too many,” said Leith Anderson, NAE President. “Anika Smith joining the NAE team brings new leadership to the ongoing cause of abortion elimination by helping women and men make right choices. She understands and relates to the young adult generation, which has the greatest number of abortions today.”

Prior to joining the NAE, Smith worked as a policy analyst and editor at the Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture where she also managed the organization’s social networking campaigns. Her writing has been published online and in print at Human Events, Touchstone Magazine, and The Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Smith graduated magna cum laude with a degree in political science and a minor in professional writing from Seattle Pacific University. Her interest is in the intersection of faith and culture, particularly as it relates to women and families.

While in Seattle, Smith was involved with a non-denominational prayer movement focused on upholding the sanctity of life, and she worked on the campaign against assisted suicide in Washington State.

“I have been humbled to witness protection of life at its most vulnerable, both at the beginning and the end, done by Christians who displayed love and compassion worthy of their calling,” Smith said. “It is my hope to build on this love and compassion and to see the number of abortions reduced in America.”

Established in May 2010, the NAE Generation Forum’s work has focused on exploring the practical and realistic approaches to curtail the nation’s high abortion rate, holding forums across the country among diverse groups, from inner-city church pastors and pregnancy care providers to college students and influential culture shapers. The Generation Forum has also commissioned polls and focus groups regarding evangelical opinions about sexuality and abortion prevention, and created the document, “Theology of Sex,” to help evangelicals understand and cherish human sexuality.
