For Immediate Release: Oct. 2, 2009 Contact: Sarah Kropp, 202-789-1011
Washington, D.C. – Next week prominent evangelical Christian leaders will discuss areas where Christian justice is urgently needed in the United States and world. The Evangelical Leaders Forum, convened by the National Association of Evangelicals, will be held at First Baptist Church of Glenarden in Landover, Md. on Oct. 8-9, 2009.
Senate Chaplain Barry Black will address the role religious leaders can play in leading the nation through difficult times during the Forum’s opening session on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. Chap. Black served in the U.S. Navy for over 27 years, ending his navy career as Chief of Navy Chaplains, and has been serving as the 62nd Senate Chaplain for six years.
The invitation-only Forum will resume Oct. 9 from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m and will highlight serious issues, including creation care, evangelism, financial challenges, immigration, marriage, nuclear terrorism, poverty and the sanctity of human life.
“It is our hope that this moment of dialogue with one another will contribute to a profound and enduring engagement of evangelicals in the most critical concerns,” said Leith Anderson, NAE President. “The evangelical voice is needed in the public sphere. Together we can make a difference.”
Michael Gerson, columnist for the Washington Post and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Global Engagement, and Luis Lugo, Director of the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, will speak during two plenary sessions.
Key sponsors include the Evangelical Council on Financial Accountability, Evangelical Environmental Network, Marriage Co-Mission, Micah Challenge USA, Mission America Coalition, The One Campaign, Renewal, Two Futures Project and World Relief.
“Evangelicals are not afraid to tackle the tough issues,” said Galen Carey, NAE Director of Government Affairs. “Our faith motivates us to engage in vigorous but respectful debate as we search for solutions, always in a spirit of humility and civility.”
Leith Anderson and Galen Carey will be available for interviews. Press credentials are required to attend the Oct. 7-8 events. To request interviews with Anderson or Carey and/or to register your attendance, email Sarah Kropp. |
