My Cape Town 2010 Experience

By Greg Johnson, President of Standing Together and U.S. Delegate to Cape Town 2010

Greg_JohnsonAmazed! Humbled! Inspired! Each of these words captured some of the emotions I experienced while attending Cape Town 2010, the third great conference on world evangelization. As I boarded my first flight from Salt Lake City to Seattle, then on to a connecting flight to Amsterdam and from there finally to Cape Town on Oct. 13, I was sure there had to be some mistake. All I could think was, “How could a young parachurch leader from Utah be one of only 400 U.S. delegates to attend a gathering of some 4,000 believers from around 200 nations of the world?” Throughout my time in Cape Town I would ask this question again over and over.

I was truly amazed from the first moment I landed in Cape Town with fellow NAE Board member Carl Nelson and new friend and brother in Christ Hien Le from Vietnam, whom I had met in the air. There was for me an immediate sense of history in the making -- God on the move on a grand scale and that the body of Christ was uniting for an epic moment of opportunity, exhortation and divine direction.

When the delegates came together for the first time to meet our fellow table mates on Sunday, Oct. 17, I was amazed once again. Pastor Mourner from Syria, Yemmy, a female pastor from Nigeria, Christol from the Netherlands who worked with World Vision, and Martin Sanders from Nyack Bible College in New York were the small group members to whom God had assigned me to engage the themes and issues of Cape Town 2010. The opening session of Cape Town 2010, “Welcome to Africa,” the daily devotions from Ephesians, the worldwide network of cutting edge Christian leaders… it was simply an amazing experience day after day.

I was humbled by learning specifically about the suffering church, the persecuted church, the impoverished church around the world. I was inspired to return to the United States with a renewed commitment to follow Jesus and to proclaim his gospel in the unique place God has called me to serve, Utah, my little piece of God’s global vision. Wow, God, thanks for this incredible invitation! Please use it to advance your work in my life!
